Located in the backyard of a family home and accessed by a rear lane to the south, this project involved the design of a new garage and workshop with a granny flat above. A first floor verandah and terrace is arranged to maintain the privacy of the surrounding properties. A gate from the lane way opens into a garden courtyard allowing access (via external stairs) to the upper terrace and flat, a door direct to the garage and down the side path to the main house. The design takes cues from the sheds and garages that line the rear laneway – a rich, yet rudimentary and honest architecture.
